World Fantasycon

The Slab Press had a great time in Brighton earlier this month for World Fantasycon. The weather was extremely blustery, so we didn’t much venture out of the hotel except to eat, whereas normally I’d have been exploring the Lanes and all its quirky shops.

The dealers’ room was quite quiet considering it was a World Fantasycon, and was down a bit of a trek through some dingy corridors and a service lift that was incorrectly labelled, but thank goodness for the diligence of the Red Coats who helped direct the customers our way. Lovely people!

The Slab had the very first launch of the convention with Hiding Under the Leaves. It was well attended and we sold a heap of books. Several of the authors were there to sign copies for people.

I also ran into Run Along the Shelves’ Womble who told me that a review was out that weekend for the book, and he said some lovely things. Thank you!

“a great selection of folk horror tales with a range of styles to entrap you in more ways than one.”

“Many more tales await you in this anthology but I really enjoyed the range of voices and ideas being explored here. If you now post Halloween need some more chills this is highly recommended!”

Later on the Friday, I took part in the Publishing Demystified panel along with David Thomas Moore and Amy Borsuk of Rebellion, and splatterpunk author/editor Stephen Kozeniewski. It was a really good panel and I hope the attendees got some useful info from us.

Saturday was BFS Awards day. I was a judge for the Best Artist category, which was won by Kelly Chong. It was great to cheer on all the nominees and winners.

The highlight on Sunday night was the karaoke. It was highly oversubscribed so I never got to sing myself, to the relief of many ears, but as ever our friend Annie delighted with a sultry and amusing take on “Summertime”. Claire Cartwright now takes the reins from David Thomas Moore who has been running the event for years.

I finally got to see a bit of Brighton on Monday when the weather brightened and Neil and I went on the i360 with our friends Jo and Roz to see the town from on high.

So that was our weekend in Brighton!

Open Call

In other news, we have a couple of open calls for submission, the details of which are on our site. One is for Rock Horror, and the other is for Dark Science Fiction set in space. If either of those tempt your creative side, then get writing!

TikTok

An indie author told me that we should be on TikTok, so we have a presence on there now. Please follow. I will try to post things.

Seasonal E-Book Deal

We don’t mention a particular weekday, nor its supposed colour (besides, it’s a red-brown). However, we are offering the e-book of Vivid Worlds for just 99p on our Payhip store until Sunday 30th November. Both e-pub and Kindle files are available (just use send to Kindle to add this to your device).

This is a great opportunity to add a wonderful science-fiction anthology to your library at a bargain price, featuring many superb stories that deserve to be read.

Awards Nomination Season

Do please consider The Slab Press when making your end of year nominations. This year we have published a science-fiction anthology, Vivid Worlds, and a folk horror anthology, Hiding Under the Leaves. We are very proud of these books and feel they are definitely worthy.

An Extra Fair This Year!

We have just squeezed in a place at the St Michael’s Church Christmas Fair in Northampton on Saturday 29th November, and will be sharing the space with Puzzle Woodcrafts made by Neil K. Bond for those looking for a bookish gift.
