I got to stay local last weekend for Book Extravaganza at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. Book Extravaganza run great events where you can find unusual and interesting books from small presses and indie authors, plus literary gifts. I think we’ll book into more of those in the future!

Meeting the Mayor, Councillor Paul Joyce and Mayoress Mylissa Joyce

Loz Cadman at her stall

A lot of people came through the doors, and I think shoppers were pleased with their purchases, but I think customers and sellers alike would have been happier if the room wasn’t like a sauna, with strobing strip lights, and if the café was actually open. So glad to have friends to nip out for tea for me, or I don’t know what I’d have done. A busy weekend event and not one person to run the café? Tsk tsk, Northampton Museum.

Fantasycon Kindle Promo

This weekend, we would be off to Fantasycon flying the flag for The Slab, but only Neil will be there due to Donna being poorly. (Talking about myself in 3rd person here is almost as horrible as I’m feeling)

Well… I was part of the programming… Now I’m just part of the FOMO.

As we don’t have a table, we have decided to run a Kindle promotion this weekend.

Laughs in Space will be £0.99 on Amazon UK and $1.99 on Amazon US from 8am on Friday October 11th through to 6pm on Sunday October 13th. 😄📱📖

Calls for Submission

Our subscribers got early notification of our calls for submission. If you would like early notification of this sort of thing, then please consider subscribing!

The Solar Punk Anthology

Vivid Worlds, to be published April 2025, will be an anthology of new short science-fiction/science-fantasy stories in the growing solar punk genre. We want you to tell us of futures in which we take our custodianship of the planet we call home seriously. Hopeful stories. What innovations can we bring forward to survive and thrive? We want colour, culture, and nature at the forefront of your stories.

Submissions will open 24th November 2024 and will close at midnight on 15th December 2024, but please do submit early in the period if you can. Before this time, feel free to ask questions.

The Folk-Horror Anthology

Hiding Under the Leaves, to be published November 2025, will be an anthology of folk-horror short stories. Think curses and cunning folk; superstitions and the old ways; twisted rural landscapes and dark, creeping woodlands.

Submissions will open 9th February 2025 and will close in the witching hour (midnight again!) 23rd February 2025.

For both anthologies:

Stories should aim to be 2-9000 words, and will be paid at 1p a word to a maximum of £50. Longer or shorter stories may be considered but will be a harder sell.

Stories should be sent to donna@theslab.press as an attachment – Word .docx preferred, not PDF, Standard Manuscript Formatting.

Please do not send stories before the submissions windows open!
